I was taking a leisurely walk about a
hundred yard from my home when I noticed a lot of activity in a small
apple tree along the road. I saw several Orioles and Purple Finch
working their way around the top of this small tree. I set up my
tripod so that I had a good background to work with and waited for the
right moment to photograph the birds. I really liked how the color of
the blossoms cradle the bird.

I was able to work several
compositions both horizontal and vertical. The background of deep green allowed the birds to
really stand out.
Because I was able to compose my
subject in the upper right third of my composition, I could include some
of the apple blossoms. I've also noticed a nice diagonal line
between the lower blossom and the Purple Finch.

Patience always seems to be the key
to successful bird photography. One minute they're framed perfectly
in your viewfinder, you go to take the picture, and they've totally
disappeared. At the same time, your trying to watch out for
branches in the way of your subject, looking for catch light in the
eyes, and trying to get a great composition. While these bird
images near my home were photographed without the aid of a bird
feeder, carefully placed bird
feeders can help as it encourages the birds to land where you can more
easily
photograph them before or after they land at the feeder.

My mother always loved watching the
birds as they came to her feeder. She had such an amazing variety of
birds there on the reservation.
Mom really enjoyed watching the birds while sipping her morning coffee,
but It wasn't until she saw the birds that I
had photographed and down-loaded to her computer, that she was
able to see and appreciate the tremendous amount of detail in each of
the birds. Each bird had its own very distinct personality too.
We could sit on her porch and tell what bird went passed just by the
sounds that it made. Miss you Mom!

Light-Chasers
has set out to provide for you a
website that is a fun place to visit; a site that has informative
articles of interest for both the traditional film and digital
photographer. A place where you can catch up on recent trips and
favorite places. Gary's educational books and CDs are featured on the
site along with a schedule of Light-Chaser's seminars and workshops.
Photographers for the most part are
looking for that special light. They’re also looking for that special
experience with the notion that their best shot is still out there. We
all know that it doesn’t happen every day, but that’s okay, life would
be pretty boring if it did. I want Light-Chasers to be able
to provide you with the leadership and instruction you're looking for,
to help you capture that special moment. Gary leads tours, seminars and
workshops all across the country and we want you to join us in a
Light-Chasers experience. Isn’t it time you became a
Light-Chaser?
